Department of Preventive Medicine in Behavioral Medicine

The Behavioral Medicine program in Northwestern University’s
Department of Preventive Medicine is seeking highly qualified applicants
for a position as Research Assistant Professor or Post-Doctoral
Fellow, depending upon qualifications. The Department of Preventive
Medicine is comprised of 41 faculty members, of whom 4 are behavioral
scientists, and 11 are biostatisticians. Our offices are located
in downtown Chicago, near Water Tower. We conduct both mechanistic
studies and intervention trials in the areas of behavioral risk
factors (obesity, tobacco use, poor quality diet, physical inactivity),
decision-making, and evidence-based practice. Research strategies
involve novel technologies, dissemination strategies, and analytic
methods. The successful candidate will collaborate in ongoing research,
grant-writing and manuscript preparation and will help to mentor
research staff. S/he will have the use of data sets for publication
and grant submission, and will have access to career development
opportunities both through Northwestern University and the Hines
Hospital VAMC. Qualifications include a doctoral degree in behavioral
science, excellent training in research methodology and statistics,
and strong writing skills. Salary is competitive and commensurate

Biostatistician, Assistant/Associate Professor
Department of Preventive Medicine in Behavioral Medicine

The Department of Preventive Medicine of Northwestern University
Feinberg School of Medicine is seeking highly qualified applicants
with expertise in biostatistics, randomized controlled trials (RCT)
and behavioral science methodology for a tenure track position at
the assistant or associate professor level. This position will be
supported jointly by the Behavioral Medicine Group within that department
and Northwester’s Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The incumbent will have primary responsibility for research in the
Behavioral Medicine group, and will consult with investigators in
the Cancer Center. Protected time to develop research will also
be provided. The Department of Preventive Medicine is comprised
of 41 faculty members, of whom 4 are behavioral scientists, and
11 are promoting healthy diet and physical activity change, cancer
screening for minority women, tobacco use, obesity treatment, research
synthesis, RCT for the treatment of depression in primary care,
RCT evaluating stress management in medical populations, and the
development of internet- and PDA- based interventions. Cancer Center
faculty consult on a spectrum of projects including health communication
and early phase clinical trials. Investigators occupy a supportive
and collaborative environment well-funded by grants and contracts.
The Department's offices are located in downtown Chicago, near Water
Tower. Previous Opportunities include consulting with other research
groups, and some teaching of basic biostatistics to students in
the MS programs in epidemiology and biostatistics and in public
health. Applicants must have a doctorate degree in Biostatistics,
Statistics or equivalent, and at least one-year of post graduate
experience. Good communication skills and the ability to work as
part of a multidisciplinary team are essential. Primary academic
appointment would be in the Department of Preventive Medicine. Salary

Staff Positions
Postdoctoral Position in Behavioral Medicine.
Northwestern University's Department of Preventive Medicine is
searching for a postdoctoral fellow with strong interest and competency
in the area of behavioral risk factors (tobacco use, poor quality
diet, physical inactivity, stress), intervention research, and evidence-based
practice. The Behavioral Medicine group conducts both mechanistic
studies and intervention trials that involve novel contexts, technologies,
and dissemination strategies. The primary objective of this fellowship
is to prepare the individual for an academically oriented career
in clinical research. The fellow will work on a trial that uses
e-technology to promote lifestyle change, will have the use of data
sets for publications, and will have access to career development
opportunities both through Northwestern University and the Hines
Hospital VA. Applicants should have a doctorate in behavioral science,
excellent writing skills, and training in research methodology and
statistics. Women and minority applicants encouraged to apply. Appointments
begin at any time and are for one year, renewable to two. Salary
and benefits are competitive, and include a tuition discount of
85% for MPH, MSEB or other graduate courses taken at Northwestern.
