Philip Greenland, MD, is a BA graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts and an MD graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Following post-graduate education in internal medicine and cardiology, Dr. Greenland was an Assistant and Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Preventive and Community Medicine, and Psychiatry at the University of Rochester from 1980-1991. In 1989-90, Dr. Greenland was Visiting Professor of Cardiology at the Henry Neufeld Cardiovascular Institute at Tel-Hashomer Hospital, Tel-Aviv University, Israel.

In 1991, Dr. Greenland became the Harry W. Dingman Professor and Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Greenland is also Professor of Medicine at Northwestern and past Medical Director of Cardiovascular Rehabilitation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He spent a Sabbatical year in 2001-2002 in the Division of Preventive Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Greenland served as Department Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University until September, 2005 when he assumed a new position as Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research at the School of Medicine. He is Director of the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute and Principal Investigator of Northwestern University's NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA).

Dr. Greenland is also the Editor of Archives of Internal Medicine.

Research Interests

Dr. Greenland's research, teaching and clinical interests all focus on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. He has received numerous research grant awards and authored or co-authored over 200 papers, book chapters, and monographs on topics related to heart disease prevention, heart disease in women, and heart diseases in general. Dr. Greenland's current research focuses on women's health, heart diseases in women, risk factors for cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease epidemiology, and nutritional aspects of high blood pressure.

Dr. Greenland was Principal Investigator (PI) for several NIH-funded training programs including the Northwestern University Mentored Clinical Scholars Program (K12), and the Post-doctoral Training Program (T32) in Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention. He is PI for Northwestern's CTSA program.
