Susan M. Gapstur, PhD, MPH

Professor

Dr. Susan Gapstur research focuses on identifying the risk factors related to cancer morbidity and mortality, and identifying potential differences across ethnically and racially diverse populations. Dr. Gapstur, PhD, MPH is a 1983 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse (with highest honors, BS degree in microbiology) and received her MPH degree in 1989 and PhD degree in 1993 from the School of Public Health, University of Minnesota, in epidemiology.

In 1994, following post-graduate research training at the University of Arizona, Arizona Cancer Center, Dr. Gapstur joined the Department of Preventive Medicine at Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University.

Dr. Gapstur is also the Associate Director of Cancer Prevention and Control within the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Research Interests

As an epidemiologist, Dr. Gapstur's goals are to combine traditional epidemiologic methods with biochemical techniques applied in cancer research. She has developed independent and collaborative research studies focusing on three areas: diet and hormones; breast and prostate cancer; and molecular epidemiology of cancer risk.

Dr. Gapstur is currently Principal on the following research projects: Determinants of Steroid Hormones in Black and White Men, Serum Sex Hormone Levels and Subclinical Atherosclerosis, and the Postdoctoral Training Program in Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention .
