Dr. Yan is a cardiovascular epidemiologist with a background in demography and health economics. Her main research interests are prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases (including diabetes). She has been involved in investigating associations of major modifiable risk factors and psychosocial factors with long-term coronary and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. She is highly interested in and committed to translating best evidence into policy and practice globally, especially in China. She is currently the head of the Research and Development Division at the George Institute for International Health, China and the director of the NHLBI/UHG Center of Excellence for Chronic Disease Prevention and Control in China.

Research Interests

The main area of her research is the etiology and prevention of cardiovascular disease, in particular, the causes, prevention, and management of major cardiovascular risk factors -- blood pressure, obesity, cholesterol, and smoking -- and their health consequences (i.e., subclinical and clinical diseases, mortality, and health-related quality of life). Two central themes of her research are: 1) the interaction between psychosocial factors and physical health; and 2) the life course approach (from preconception to older age) for the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
