Brian C. - H. Chiu, PhD

Associate Professor

Dr. Chiu received his undergraduate degree from the National PingTung Institute of Agriculture in Taiwan in 1986, followed by a Master’s degree in Nutrition from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1992) and a doctoral degree in Epidemiology from the University of Iowa (1997). He joined the faculty in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University in 2003. Prior to coming to Northwestern University, Dr. Chiu was Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Dr. Chiu is also the Deputy Director of the Master's of Science Program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

Research Interests and Projects

Dr. Chiu’s research interests are in epidemiologic and molecular studies of cancer etiology and prevention. He is especially interested in the relations of nutritional and environmental factors, genetic events, and gene-environment interactions to the etiology and pathogenesis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Dr. Chiu and his team are also using cytogenetic and molecular genetic information to define subgroups of NHL in order to identify specific risk factors. He is the Principal Investigator for NHL Population-Based Case-Control Study and NHL Cytogenetic Epidemiology Study. Dr. Chiu is a member of the International Lymphoma Epidemiology Consortium (InterLymph), and the co-Chair of the Diet and Lifestyle Subgroup.
