 Project Coordinator

The Behavioral Medicine program in Northwestern University’s Department of Preventive Medicine is seeking highly qualified applicants for a position as Project Coordinator.  The successful candidate will assist with coordination of a two-year randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a healthy lifestyle intervention. Study participants meet regularly with a counselor and peers who support behavioral adherence to weight loss. This study is being funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009) in partnership with researchers from the University of
Massachusetts and the Illinois Institute of Technology.
The successful candidate will be required to perform daily tasks independently with general
direction from the Project Manager and Principal Investigator.


Specific Duties May Include:

  1. Assist in creating the study treatment manual and assessment materials.
  2. Coordinate advertisements to recruit participants.
  3. Manage responses to web screeners and conduct telephone and in-person screening
    sessions to confirm eligibility, complete informed consent and HIPPA forms, and officially
    register patients in the trial.
  4. Conduct baseline and follow-up evaluations, using questionnaires and anthropometric
    measures, and assign participants to a treatment condition.
  5. Serve as lifestyle interventionist for a caseload of participants – providing brief
    individualized coaching on physical activity and dietary intake.
  6. Troubleshoot technical difficulties with smartphones or accelerometers.
  7. Hand enter and/or verify entry of paper diet and activity records.
  8. Help to prepare necessary IRB documentation (annual renewal, protocol revisions, adverse events). Also assist in preparing project reports and other required documents for NIH.
  9. Help to prepare posters and/or papers for presentation at national conferences.
  10. Assist with grant preparation and manuscript submissions to scholarly journals.
  11. Code videotapes from a trial that examined best ways to combine dietary and physical
    activity prescriptions in order to maximize behavior change.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in psychology, public health, or related field.
  2. Strong interest in research.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  4. Strong organizational skills.
  5. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  1. At least one year of experience working with participants in a research setting.

Research Assistant Professor / Post-Doctoral Fellow

The Behavioral Medicine program in Northwestern University’s Department of Preventive Medicine seeks highly qualified applicants for a position as Research Assistant Professor or Post-Doctoral Fellow, depending upon qualifications. The Department of Preventive Medicine is
comprised of 46 faculty members, 9 of whom are behavioral scientists. Our offices are
located in downtown Chicago, near the Water Tower. The successful candidate will lead
an NIH OBSSR-funded project to create resources to support Evidence-Based Behavioral
Practice (EBBP)
S/he will work with Dr. Bonnie Spring, Ph.D. and experts from around the country to write manuscripts and create online learning modules and decision support tools to integrate research and practice in real-world conditions.
S/he will also be trained to conduct systematic reviews on the effectiveness of behavioral
interventions. S/he will collaborate in ongoing research and grant-writing, help to mentor
research staff, have opportunities to publish and give professional conference
presentations, be able to use data sets for publication and grant submission, and have
access to career development opportunities through Northwestern University. Candidates
should have a Ph.D. in psychology (or related field), interest in evidence-based practice
and/or decision-making, and strong writing skills. Interest in learning science and
experience with web-based tools is desirable. Women and minority applicants

Research Assistant Professor / Post-Doctoral Fellow in Team Science

The Behavioral Medicine program in Northwestern University’s Department of Preventive Medicine seeks highly qualified applicants for a position as Research Assistant Professor or Post-Doctoral Fellow, depending upon qualifications. The Department of Preventive Medicine is comprised of 46 faculty members, of whom 9 are behavioral scientists. Our offices are located in downtown Chicago, near the Water Tower. In addition to conducting primary research, we are engaged in creating cutting edge on-line training resources to support effective team science. The successful candidate will lead the development of 4 online learning modules that will be used by the nationwide CTSAs to help researchers conduct effective team science. Qualifications include a doctoral degree in behavioral science or a related field, excellent
training in research methodology and statistics, and strong writing and communication skills. Expertise in team science and/or learning science are desirable. The successful candidate will collaborate in ongoing research, grant-writing and manuscript preparation and will help to mentor research staff. S/he will have the use of data sets for publication and grant submission, and will have access to career development opportunities through Northwestern University.
